5.Wire the glued cells together, per-tabbed cells make the wiring together easier. The tabs can be soldered together. A diode needs to be connected which will allow power to flow in one direction.

6. This is the last step of how to build a solar panel, the cover needs to be attached and screwed over the box in a secure fashion. Take the solar panel into the direct sunlight to test it, a voltmeter needs to be attached to the panel needs to read 18 volts if not more.

A lot of you reading this will be interested in building your own homemade solar panels. You will have read lot of information on them, but I am sure there is one question you would like answered above all, how effective are they or do they really work?
I first put together my first homemade solar panels quite some time ago now and I have had a good result so far. Whilst many claim you can get energy savings of up to 80% off your usual power bill most of you will find that you don’t reap this much initially, especially with your first homemade solar panels. The best way to start down the road of energy self sufficiency is to start small, aim to power a few devices at first, you will still be slashing cash off your monthly bill and possibly selling excess energy back to the grid.
Once you have made your first one, it is simply a matter of rinse and repeat, so you can become more and more dependent on solar energy. Perhaps initially look at running a few appliances such as your laptop, radio, television or even lighting, in time you will be able to add more and more as you build up your familiarity and expertise with the process.
You will still need to run some appliances, such as mains run ovens and air-conditioning using the power grid, as they draw massive amounts of energy, much more than even conventional solar power systems can provide (although there are some products like cookers that are now being produced that are designed to run on solar energy). As you increase the number of your homemade solar panels you will find you can get close to the 80% figure many enthusiasts have obtained.
So the short answer is yes! Homemade solar panels really do work!

Unless you have been living under a stone recently you will have noticed that Oil prices are going up almost every day. That’s not just bad news for motorists though, for the list of things that are made from oil is unbelievably long. In some states you may even qualify for tax relief on such a system considerably, as well as making the owners eligible for a tax cut in select states.

Todays solar power cells are also becoming cheaper. For the price of a years utility bills, it is now possible to build a solar power system for your house that will give a lifetimes supply of free electricity with virtually no maintenance.

Landmark Efficiency Gain in Solar Cell Technology

Tracking advances in solar cell technology, I’ve stumbled across another landmark efficiency gain.  This one, obtained by switching from conventional screen printing to a non-contact aerosol jet printer, has upped efficiencies by 2 percent on thin-film solar cells.Thin-film solar cells (TFSC) are defined as solar cells made by depositing one or more thin layers (nanometers to micrometers) of photovoltaic material on a substrate. These thin-film cells are classed as: amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), polysilicon, dye-sensitized solar cells, or organic (plastic, or polymer) solar cells – the latter three still in development stages.Printing is a deposition method, and the use of aerosol jet printing could raise the copper indium gallium selenide efficiency – already reported at 9.5 percent (with reports from NREL in excess of 19 percent) – to a value competitive with silicone-based solar at about half the cost to manufacture.The advance, coming from the Fraunhofer Institute’s Solar Energy Systems in Germany, reports that using an Optomec printer enabled thinner strata deposition of metallic, semiconducting and insulating inks via nanoscale pigments developed by Applied Nanotech Inc. enabled efficiences in excess of 20 percent, as compared to previous figures of 16 to 18 percent.Fraunhofer also used the printer to fabricate front-side metallization lines on otherwise conventional solar cells, which enabled it to shrink the metallization area and boost efficiency by reducing shading losses.Screen-printed solar cells can be manufactured faster than ink-jet printing methods, and the Optomec’s 40-nozzle head can print a solar cell in under 3 seconds. What this means to you, the consumer, is a future of truly affordable solar. What it means to the environment is of inestimable value.Of course, waiting to save a few bucks doesn’t make a lot of sense in terms of the environment. News coming out of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland (December 5 to 12) indicates that climate change is not only upon us, but likely to reach that critical “tipping point” in as little as a decade.
